We had heaps of fun creating this retro brand identity for a tattoo aftercare brand. We helped Soma Tattoo Supply with brand strategy and identity design for their range of vegan tattoo aftercare products. Soma is the latest venture by tattoo artists and partners Chris James and Stacey Nightingale, who also own Sol Temple Tattoo. Chris and Stacey are passionate vegans and environmentalists. They contacted Ulysses Design Co for our assistance in crafting a sustainable, conscientious and authentic brand strategy and retro brand identity that would represent their values and connect with their audience.

Strategy

Vegan, cruelty free and environmentally friendly products are few and far between in the tattoo game. Our intention for this brand strategy and retro brand identity was to advocate for change in the industry. The challenge was to change perception and encourage tattoo artists to move away from synthetic products and take a chance on a new, more sustainable option. Our solution was to connect with tattoo artists and studios and get the product into their hands.

Process

Following our brand strategy workshop, we went in a nostalgic, feel good direction for this retro brand identity. We used a warm, natural colour palette to represent the organic side of the brand as well as give a retro Aussie feel. We hand lettered the logotype to build on the natural theme. We added a graphic element suit of hand drawn icons that represent ingredients of the products and important concepts to Soma. We brought the retro brand identity together with a bubbly serif font pairing for their website, packaging and branded communication.

Design

Working collaboratively with Chris and Stacey, we created a brand strategy and retro brand identity design that represented their strong brand values and would appeal to their audience. After our competitive analysis we were confident we had produced a unique, original and authentic identity that stood out from the competition and provided a solid foundation to launch the brand from.
